Africa: Safari Pictures (Round One)

Playing around a little in the Johannesberg Airport in South Africa.

Playing in Sally's yard in Nairobi, Kenya. We're actually playing in Sally's clothes as well, because our luggage was still lost and missing at this point.

We saw a lot of Baboons. Some were more intimidating than others.

Also, they bite.

Elephants!

Ah... nature.

The Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

Action shot!

We had to wonder. What happens if you lick one of these?

Inside the Safari truck.

Giraffe!

Eastern Green Mamba .. Very Dangerous. From wikipedia: The green mamba's venom is highly venomous, containing calcicludine amongst other neurotoxins. Any bite from a green mamba is potentially fatal and should be regarded as a medical emergency requiring immediate hospital treatment. Jeremy was standing right under this little guy completely unaware until a nice lady suggested he move away.

Hippos fighting! There was a large and very smelly pool of hippos, and many were engaged in games of dominance. It was very impressive to be near, and to witness.

These young giraffes were "necking". Male giraffes sometimes spar by swinging their heads at one another. This behavior, which can entwine their necks, is called "necking."

We saw lots and lots, and lots of gazelles.

We visited Olduvai Gorge.

Fossil remains of human ancestors have been found from as long as 2.5 million years ago.

All in good time.

A little Yin-Yang sky.

Lots and lots and lots of Zebras.

Look closely. This Gnu, or Wildebeast, is giving birth. See the hooves?

An hour later, the baby takes his first steps! Watching this animal give birth, and seeing those first steps was easily one of the highpoints of our entire journey.

Lion!

Black Rhino! There are only around 3600 of the Black Rhinoceros left in the world.

Baby Zebras are sooo cute!

Hyenas are always on the look out for the babies that can't keep up, as well as the old or infirm.

That's enough for now. More to come. Keep an eye out. = )
